"Nature is not a place to visit, it is home"
Hints & Tips
A good nights sleep from Tony Slaney
To ensure a decent kip even during a storm/high winds, just take a set of ear plugs. The soft silicone type. I keep them in my warm kit jacket pocket as well as an eye mask for those early morning sunlight days.

Backpacks from Mick Fitzpatrick
No need for multiple stuff sacks. One heavy duty rubble sack will keep everything dry. Maybe just one more for your sleeping bag 😉

Backpacks from Mick Fitzpatrick
Make sure you get the correct torso length. It makes a LOT of difference

Cold Weather from Tony Slaney
To preserve the batteries in your electrical items in the cold (or cooking gas) I put a hot pad in my electrics bag and inside my cook gear. I will also put a couple in my boots so they are warm in the morning.

Drinking from Mick Fitzpatrick
Try and use those all in one drinks. Sachets that include coffee etc, sugar/sweetener and milk. Less litter and VERY convenient ... I like the Galaxy chocolate drinks with a shot of brandy 😋

Drinking from Mick Fitzpatrick
Unless it's REALLY hot you should only need 1 litre of water in your backpack. Water is HEAVY!! you don't need to carry too much. Trust me 😉

Drinking from Mick Fitzpatrick
Recce your route for water/streams/pools etc. If camping try and be close to water. Not too close though!

Eating from Mick Fitzpatrick
Like we did in Norway ... a big filled with sweet stuff makes life a whole lot easier, easy access and cuts down on litter. For a change try a savoury version ... maybe pieces of cheese and jerky 😋

Tinned meals like stews etc decanted in to Mylar Bags will give you boil in the bag meals without the expense. Mylar Bags are readily available from Amazon etc. They seal with a simple household iron. You can now get the zip seal type of Mylar bag so easier to open and can be resealed to save any food left in the bag

Eating from Mick Fitzpatrick
ALWAYS carry 'emergency food' that can sustain you in case 'something' goes wrong. It's not being 'doom n gloom' or OTT. It doesn't have to be anything too heavy, just long lasting food in a sealed bag. Hopefully you will never need it 👍
This emergency food can be taken on backpacks or day hikes.

Electrics from Mick Fitzpatrick
Nitecore headlamps (especially the NU25) are the biz, well worth the wait from China/AliExpress

Electrics from Mick Fitzpatrick
A small lamp for your tent. Fenix are the best but expensive. Cheaper are available in Decathlon etc. Yes a head lamp is essential, but a lamp hanging from your tent roof is a nice and easy luxury.

Footwear from Mick Fitzpatrick
Get some mini spikes for slopes. They will work for most Winter work. Light, cheap and quick to put on.

Headwear from Mick Fitzpatrick
A snood/headover/neckwarmer is one of the most versatile bits of kit ever! Get one!!

Hip flask upgrade from Tony Slaney
300ml Vapur bottles. Ultralight and can be rolled up when empty. No transfer of taste from the plastic either. Superb little bottles for your favourite tipple

Hygiene from Mick Fitzpatrick
Always Take a roll of toilet paper. Take out the centre cardboard tube, flatten it and keep in a zip lock bag. Multi functional as well!

Hygiene from Mick Fitzpatrick
A small packet of Wet Wipes are essential for keeping your hands clean.

Jackets from Mick Fitzpatrick
Tenacious Tape is great for making repairs to down and synthetic jackets.

Layers from Mick Fitzpatrick
A quilted (down or synthetic) jacket is pretty essential all year round ... even evenings during high summer (if we ever get one!) evenings can be chilly

Layers from Mick Fitzpatrick
The Merino Wool tops and bottoms in Aldi and Lidl are the biz, cheap as chips as well

Mozzies from Mick Fitzpatrick
Hate mozzies etc? Get yourself a Thermacell Repeller. It connects to a standard gas canister and slowly let's off plume of repellent and will stop ANYTHING ... quite amazing kit 👍

Multi Functional from Mick Fitzpatrick
Always try and make kit multi functional. A good example is walking poles as tent poles. There's many more.

Pee bottle upgrade from Tony Slaney
This is a flexible Nalgene bottle which can be rolled up when empty to save space. Wide necked, which is helpful.

Sleeping from Mick Fitzpatrick
Get a Pee bottle to stop you getting out the tent in the middle of the night! You'll thank me 👍

Sleeping from Mick Fitzpatrick
Sleeping bag not keeping you as warm as you want? Get some cheap ex-Army 'Softy' trousers from Ebay and sleep in those and your quilted jacket. Multi-functional and saves buying a new bag! Softy trousers are cheap as chips, 15 to 20 quid! and light weight. You can buy down trousers that are a LOT more expensive ... but why?

Sleeping from Mick Fitzpatrick
All year round try and use a bivvy bag ... why? ... we all spill liquid inside tents eventually ... if it gets on your bag!!! It also stops the drip - drip of condensation. A Tyvek one from China/AliExpress is less than 20 quid, ultra-lightweight and great kit

Storage from Mick Fitzpatrick
Zip Lock bags are excellent for storing various foods and other items long term, like First Aid kit etc.

Tents from Mick Fitzpatrick
On each peg out corner of your tent add elastic cord (AKA shock or bungee cord). you will always get a near perfect pitch as the cord naturally centres. Most the time the bungee is enough, but in high winds you might want to also peg the original points. 2mm cord is perfect for the job.

Tents from Mick Fitzpatrick
If you can wait a couple weeks, the Lanshan 2 and the Cloud Peak 2 are amazing tents for the money. From China/AliExpress.
